The Many Benefits of Meditation

Here at DailyRitual, many of us practice meditation daily. The habitual process of training our minds to focus and redirect our thoughts has helped us and our clients in too many ways to count. You can think of meditation as exercise for your brain. And just like any exercise, meditation yields benefits.

The benefits of meditation affect your mind, body, and soul. While we break down the benefits, you will realize that the physical, mental health, and spiritual benefits are all intertwined.

Physical Benefits of Meditation

Research shows that there are numerous physical benefits of meditation. And when we say physical benefits, we don’t mean building muscle or increasing flexibility. The physical benefits are more subtle, but can include:

Decreased Stress and Lower Blood Pressure

Stress can wreak havoc on your body, with increased heart rate, high blood pressure, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and more. Chronic stress can lead to multiple physical and mental health problems. Fortunately, scientific studies show that meditation reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This in turn, reduced the overall level of stress study participants reported.

Reducing stress with meditation can help prevent further health issues as well as the need for certain medications.

Improved Sleep

Who doesn’t want a good night’s sleep? For many of us, it’s hard to fall asleep and stay asleep, leaving us feeling fatigued the next day. So can meditation help you sleep better? According to scientific studies, the answer is yes.

One meditation and sleep study randomly assigned people to one of two groups. One group practiced meditation, while the other didn't. Those who meditated fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer, compared to those who didn't meditate!

Meditation can help you control or redirect the racing or "runaway" thoughts that can keep you awake at night. It can also help you relax your body, placing you in a peaceful state where you're more likely to fall asleep.

Reduce Age-Related Memory Loss

Improving your focus and attention span with meditation can help increase your memory and mental clarity as you age. A review of 12 meditation and memory studies found that a number of meditation techniques increased attention, memory, and mental quickness in older volunteers

Mental Health Benefits of Meditation

As we all know, our physical health and mental health are tied together. By using meditation to control stress and improve sleep, we can improve our mental health in the following ways:

Reduce Anxiety

Reduce stress, and you almost automatically reduce your anxiety level. Studies show that mindfulness meditation can also help reduce phobias, paranoia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic attacks.

To be successful at reducing anxiety long-term, meditation should become part of your everyday routine. You may want to consider partnering meditation with yoga, as the combination of mental and physical practice reaps additional benefits.

Decrease Depression

Meditation can also help increase positive thinking and improve your self-image. Scientific research shows that meditation can actually change the electrical activity in your brain. One study compared electrical activity in the brains of people who practiced mindfulness meditation to the electrical activity of others who did not. Participants who meditated showed measurable changes in brain activity in areas related to positive thinking and optimism compared to those who did not meditate.

Spiritual Benefits of Meditation

Now we get to the intangible spiritual benefits of meditation. The art of meditation stems from Eastern religions like Hinduism and Buddhism. But mindful meditation practice isn’t limited to any religion. And even if you are not a spiritual person, you can’t help but experience some of the benefits, whatever you choose to call them.

With spiritual meditation, you look inward, and acknowledge and accept yourself with compassion. Compassion for oneself can lead to compassion and caring for others. And the more energy we devote to others, the happier we become ourselves. Trust in the divine, intuitive power that is shining within you and embrace our interconnectedness.
